The event was witnessed by Gordon Crundwell, 57, on safari near Shingwedzi in Kruger National Park.

Crundwell observed what began as a peaceful scene with hippos and crocodiles at the watering hole, only to be disrupted by a loud and irritable elephant. The herd scattered as the elephant charged toward the hippos, leaving behind a baby hippo.
The elephant then used its trunk to push and toss the helpless calf. Crundwell, who documented the rare encounter, described it as a highly unusual sight.

“Luckily, the elephant didn’t harm the baby hippo and eventually left it alone, returning to the water where it continued its agitation by trumpeting and splashing,” Crundwell recounted.
However, the situation turned surprisingly when the young hippo, appearing unharmed, followed the elephant.
As the large animal walked away, the baby nipped at its rear foot, prompting the elephant to try kicking it off.
In an unexpected twist, the baby hippo even chased the elephant out of the water at one point. The determined little calf seemed eager to retaliate, but the encounter ended without further conflict when a rock obstructed a potential confrontation, causing the elephant to lose interest and retreat quickly.
Amid all the chaos, crocodiles at the watering hole took advantage of the disturbance, feasting on fish pushed to the shore by the commotion, Crundwell noted.
