When Heather Martin learned about a puppy living alone on the streets, she felt an overwhelming urge to help.
This decision would change the puppy’s life.

Stella, the puppy, had survived in harsh conditions without a family, finding food where she could and taking shelter on piles of trash.
Despite these challenges, Stella held onto hope that someone would save her.

That someone turned out to be Heather Martin.
Heather, in search of a new pet, heard about Stella through a friend and was immediately drawn to her story, realizing she needed to meet this brave little dog. “A coworker talked to me about Pooches Out of Puerto Rico, and my husband and I were instantly taken with [Stella],” Heather told The Dodo.

From the moment they met, Heather and Stella bonded deeply.
Heather described Stella as a “loving, sweet, playful, and curious super chewer who loves to be in the sun,” while Stella responded happily, showing her joy with excited barks.

Heather took Stella to the vet for a thorough check-up. The exam revealed Stella had been living at a dump, where she slept on garbage bags and ate whatever scraps she could find. She was severely underweight at just 9 pounds and suffered from mange, roundworms, hookworms, and scabies.
Thanks to Heather’s dedicated care and affection, Stella quickly bounced back and embraced her new life happily. She flourished in her new home, growing healthier and more energetic.

Seeing that Stella could use a companion, Heather decided to adopt another dog, Lulu, from a local shelter. The two dogs immediately bonded, filling Heather’s home with joy and boundless energy.
“Stella has been a ray of sunshine. She somehow knows when we need affection and is always ready to cuddle. She just wants to be loved and is truly perfect,” Heather expressed.
Stella’s journey from being a street dog to a beloved pet illustrates the powerful effects of kindness and care.
