Phoenix’s inspiring recovery began when he was discovered in Collinsville, Oklahoma by the compassionate team at Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue, who took him under their wing.
Initially, the rescuers were uncertain about the cause of Phoenix’s condition, debating whether it was due to illness or maltreatment. Following a series of medical tests, it was determined that Phoenix suffers from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease where the body mistakenly attacks itself, complicating the treatment process.
Despite these challenges, Phoenix’s health has dramatically improved under expert care, and he’s expected to join a loving adoptive family soon. The rescue center recently shared an update detailing the extensive care Phoenix has received since his rescue. “To unravel the mystery of Phoenix’s skin condition, the veterinarians in Owasso took biopsies, which were analyzed by Dr. Trainor, a pathologist specializing in skin diseases,” the update explained. Dr. Trainor’s expertise helped provide critical insight into Phoenix’s condition.
Phoenix’s journey also led him to the Veterinary Allergy and Dermatology Clinic in Overland Park, Kansas, where he met Dr. David Senter, a dermatologist focusing on skin disorders. The collective efforts of these specialists have fostered Phoenix’s remarkable recovery. The once-struggling dog is gaining weight, his skin is improving, and he now enjoys playing, barking, and even having his own dog couch for naps.
Although Phoenix’s signature grin and the unique appearance caused by muscle loss will remain, his bright spirit persists unfazed. To protect his sensitive skin from UV exposure, he requires sunblock and clothing.
