The saga began with a keen observation – the discovery of human footprints in the northern reaches of Tsavo East.
Once a notorious haunt for poachers and criminals, this area along the Tiva River remains a focal point for conservation efforts.
While aerial and ground patrols have tempered illegal activities, vigilance remains paramount to forestall any resurgence.
March 17 marked a critical juncture as Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced the detection of suspicious animal tracks near the Tiva River.
Taking flight, a brave pilot traced these tracks to a clandestine harbor on the river’s southern bank. Evidence of habitation, snares, and cooking implements underscored the lurking threat.
Though the perpetrators eluded capture, dismantling their makeshift base served as a warning, prompting heightened surveillance in the area.
Amidst these endeavors, the pilot’s discerning eye caught sight of something amiss – peculiar elephant tracks suggesting a possible injury.
Persistence paid off as he stumbled upon the distressed pachyderm, gingerly nursing a wounded leg.
Swift action ensued as the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) helicopter, mobilized from the Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit, swooped in to aid Dr. Limo in the bull’s rescue.
Navigating the park’s rugged terrain, inaccessible by conventional means, the helicopter facilitated aerial tranquilization, enabling the team to administer critical treatment.
The bull, bearing a grievous wound to its ankle joint from a poacher’s arrow, lay sedated as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories were administered. Carefully tended and monitored, the majestic creature was soon on the path to recovery.
As the anesthesia waned, the bull, rejuvenated, strolled back into the wild, a testament to human compassion and nature’s resilience.
Yet, the saga continues – a symbiotic relationship between aerial surveillance and on-ground vigilance persists to safeguard Tsavo’s inhabitants and pristine wilderness.
