A delightful moment unfolded at Prague Zoo when a young elephant’s love for nap time proved unbreakable, even with his mother’s best attempts to rouse him.
In a heartwarming video, the baby elephant rests deeply on his side in the grass, blissfully ignoring his surroundings.
His mother tries to coax him awake by gently running her trunk over his body, but the calf continues to nap soundly, legs twitching slightly and mouth half-open in a picture of pure relaxation. Eventually, his mother gives up and steps away.
Not one to leave the little one lying for long, a zookeeper steps in and gives the young elephant a few gentle prods. At last, he stirs, lifting his front legs and shaking off sleep.
Instantly re-energized, the calf eagerly trots alongside the keeper and catches up to his mother. The video concludes with the two elephants happily strolling off together.
Baby elephants are born weighing around 250 pounds and typically stand three feet tall. Although their vision is limited at birth, they quickly bond with their mothers, recognizing them by touch, scent, and sound.
For the first few months, they rarely stray far from their mother, nursing on about three gallons of milk daily, which continues for up to two years or more.
