On June 16, 2016, Loisaba Ranch in Kenya faced a pressing situation when a mature elephant fell into one of the ranch’s wells.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) was alerted, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s (DSWT) Sky Vet team quickly responded to assist.

The rescue team, led by KWS vet Dr. Bernard Rono, arrived at the scene and found a young bull, around 18 years old, trapped in the narrow confines of the well. The elephant was wedged tightly between the concrete walls, unable to free himself.

Faced with this challenge, a group comprising KWS Rangers, the DSWT Sky Vet team, and the Loisaba maintenance crew devised a careful plan.

They filled the well with sand and rocks to raise the ground level gradually, giving the elephant a way out.

As the well filled, the elephant’s struggle to free himself eased. He eventually shifted his body to the side, using the well’s outer wall for support.

Finally, after a long effort, the bull emerged independently, and his determination was evident despite the ordeal.

Though his legs bore some minor injuries, they were not severe enough to require further medical treatment. The elephant confidently walked away, a symbol of resilience and survival.

This successful rescue highlights the importance of collaboration in wildlife conservation. The combined efforts of Loisaba Ranch, KWS, and the DSWT Sky Vet team ensured that this elephant, now free, would continue to roam Kenya’s plains.
