Taka, a brave canine, found himself in a life-threatening situation when a fire broke out while he was in a screened-in porch. His family, unable to reach him, had no choice but to flee, leaving Taka trapped inside. Remarkably, Taka managed to escape the flames and run down the street, though he was left with severe burns covering much of his face and body. Fortunately, a nearby neighbor spotted Taka and rushed him to an emergency veterinarian for immediate care.
Dr. Emily Martin of Care More Animal Hospital in Martinez, Georgia, described the extent of Taka’s injuries: “He had burns around his eyes, mouth, ears, and belly.” Initially, the full severity of Taka’s injuries was unclear as the team was concerned about possible inhalation burns. Due to his critical condition, Taka was transferred to the University of Georgia for specialized oxygen treatments.
The ordeal was traumatic for Taka, his cries echoing through the hospital, yet the dedicated veterinary team, led by Dr. Martin, worked tirelessly to ease his suffering. Moved by Taka’s plight, Martin remarked, “I try to treat my patients all the same, but his case pulled at my heartstrings a bit more. He was in such pain, but calmed as soon as you sat with him and sang to him.”
When Taka’s family understood the extent of his injuries and the intensive care he required, they agreed to let Dr. Martin care for him. Realizing Taka’s fragile state, she decided to bring him home for the night, staying by his side despite their exhaustion. The following day, both Taka and Martin took a nap in one of the kennels, demonstrating her deep commitment to his recovery.
“A lot of times when animals are in pain, they’ll start biting just because they hurt, but he hasn’t once tried to bite. If anything, he’s comforted by people,” Martin shared, highlighting Taka’s gentle nature despite his injuries. While Martin has a busy household with five other dogs and a seven-month-old baby, she ensures that Taka receives the love and care he needs. Although she may not be able to keep him permanently, her goal is to see Taka find a home that appreciates his resilient spirit and kind personality.
Though Taka’s journey to recovery is long, his improvements are promising. Thanks to the care and support from Dr. Martin and the staff at Care More Animal Hospital, Taka is eating and moving around on his own. The road ahead may be challenging, but Taka’s determination is unwavering!
