Aaron Kinsel was working his regular Rumpke route outside Cincinnati when he noticed a discarded backpack moving near the road. According to WCPO’s original report, he stopped, opened it and found a roughly 10-week-old female boxer mix inside.
The puppy was dehydrated and had a seriously broken rear leg. Kinsel wrapped her in a sweatshirt to keep her warm, and colleagues helped get her to veterinary care. He named her Tipper, after the mechanism on a garbage truck that lifts and empties containers.
A difficult operation, then a new home
Veterinarians initially hoped to repair Tipper’s injured leg, but the damage was too severe. On February 2, 2021, the rear leg was amputated. ABC 6 reported that the operation went well and that she was recovering afterward.
Tipper did not return to an uncertain future. Kinsel and his family adopted her, giving the puppy a permanent home after the roadside discovery. By March 2021, Tipper was adapting to life on three legs. At a ceremony that month, Kinsel received the SPCA Cincinnati Good Pet Samaritan Award. FOX19 reported that veterinarians expected her to live a long, full life.

A moving bag beside a road could easily have been dismissed as wind, shifting trash or something outside a driver’s responsibility. Kinsel chose to stop. That moment of attention connected an injured animal with warmth, medical treatment and a family.
