A tiny, hairless kitten named Lucy, with large eyes and an oddly shaped head, was harshly judged by strangers online, even being called “ugly” and “terrifying.”
But behind this unusual appearance lay a misunderstood medical condition that nearly ended her life.
Lucy was suffering from hydrocephalus, a rare disorder also referred to as “water on the brain,” which results in the accumulation of fluid in the skull, causing pressure on the brain.

This serious and often fatal condition in animals meant that many kittens like Lucy don’t get a chance.
For Lucy, it seemed her fate was sealed. The breeder shared pictures of her healthy siblings, but Lucy wasn’t part of the lineup.
Following a vet’s recommendation, she was almost put down due to her poor condition—unable to eat or control her bowels, and crying endlessly.

However, hope was rekindled when Zilla Bergamini, a woman with a soft spot for rescue cats, stumbled upon Lucy’s photo. Unlike others, she saw potential in the little kitten and couldn’t ignore the call to help.
Zilla decided to adopt Lucy, knowing full well the responsibilities of caring for a special needs pet. It meant numerous vet visits, medications, and potential emergencies, requiring both time and financial resources.
Undeterred, Zilla plunged into action. She consulted a neurologist, initiated a fundraising campaign, and dedicated herself to giving Lucy a fighting chance. Once her breeder agreed, Lucy’s second chance at life began.

The initial days were challenging; Lucy cried incessantly, needed daily eye care, and suffered from severe digestive problems. But Zilla was resolute.
She modified Lucy’s diet, meticulously monitored her conditions, and sought knowledge about her disorder. Gradually, Lucy began to improve.
A specialist later discovered that the shape of Lucy’s skull was causing her eye irritation. A procedure corrected this, eliminating the need for daily medication. Over time, her health progressed significantly, allowing her personality to shine.

Today, Lucy is not just surviving; she’s thriving. She delights in watching birds through the window, chasing toys, and soaking up the sun in cozy spots around the house.
Although she still requires diapers and Zilla’s vigilant care to prevent any head injuries, her zest for life is palpable.
Lucy now enjoys outdoor strolls in a red baby stroller, charming everyone she meets—even those who initially found her appearance daunting are now often won over by her playful and affectionate nature.

What began as a story of a kitten the world almost surrendered has turned into a testament to resilience.
Saved by a woman who refused to give up, Lucy now leads a life filled with love, rest, and birdwatching. Not bad for a little kitten who was nearly forgotten.
