Introducing Chico, an incredibly resilient dog who endured a horrifying ordeal on July 10th. It was on this day that the person he trusted most attempted to take his life by attacking him with a hammer.
Fortunately, a team from an animal protection group was nearby and intervened just in time after hearing his cries. They alerted us, and we hurried to provide immediate assistance to Chico, who was in critical condition.
The attack left him with a broken jaw, numerous shattered teeth, severe brain damage, and a loss of vision in one eye.
His owner, who intended to avoid veterinary costs by committing this act, was arrested but later released after securing legal representation.
Despite his critical state, Chico began to show signs of recovery the following day. He managed to open his eyes and started making soft whimpering sounds.
With stabilized body temperature and a small intake of medicated food, Chico slowly began responding to our care. Initial surgical procedures focused on repairing the multiple fractures in his mouth, caused by the assault.
He was expected to need additional surgeries due to an open palate and damage to one of his eyes. Veterinarians made every effort to save the injured eye.
A significant concern was Chico’s lack of response in his limbs, attributed to his brain injuries. He required physical therapy, yet his determination to recover and his unwavering spirit in the face of adversity inspired all of us who cared for him.
On the third day, Chico embarked on his first underwater therapy session. Though challenging at first, he quickly adapted and made remarkable progress. After a week of consistent therapy, Chico was not only able to stand up but also began to walk.
His recovery journey continued, with treatments addressing wounds on his neck and feeding issues that necessitated the use of a feeding tube.
An operation was required to remove his damaged right eye, but Chico’s resilience shone through, resulting in a speedy recovery.
Fast forward two months and Chico has made a complete recovery, thriving in the care of his loving new family. The incredible veterinarian who played a vital role in his survival and recovery adopted him, offering him a life filled with love and security.
Chico now lives without fear and has transformed into a confident and affectionate companion. His story is a testament to the power of hope and the strength of the human-animal bond.
