Caring for pets with disabilities can be a challenge that not all pet owners are prepared to face. Unfortunately, this often leads to situations where animals are abandoned, much like Lunetta, a sweet dog found tied to a railing in the streets of Salta, Argentina.
Lunetta’s situation was dire—her back legs were strapped to a rusty wheelchair, and she was left alone on the pavement without any food or water. A note placed alongside a bag of diapers mentioned her name, age, and explained her previous owners could no longer care for her, which led a nearby dog care facility staff member to sound the alarm.
Luba Salta, a local rescue group, immediately sent two volunteers to assess Lunetta’s condition and bring her to safety. After a thorough check-up, she was placed with a foster family. Her story quickly spread on Facebook, in hopes that someone might step forward and offer the compassion and care she deserved.
Soon after, an American family expressed interest in adopting Lunetta. Initially seeming like a perfect match, they unfortunately found themselves unprepared for the extent of care Lunetta required, which resulted in her developing a severe staph infection. Her health took a serious turn for the worse, casting doubt on her future once more.
However, just as it seemed as if Lunetta’s fate was sealed, another American family intervened, providing her with the love and medical attention she desperately needed. Thanks to their dedicated care, Lunetta made an amazing recovery and finally got to enjoy the joys of a loving home.
Her new life was filled with joy and adventure. She frolicked in parks and played in the snow, aided by a specially made wheelchair that offered her newfound freedom. Lunetta even celebrated Christmas with her family, alongside her canine sister.
Sadly, time eventually caught up with Lunetta. A month after her 11th birthday, she fell ill and was taken to the intensive care unit at the University Medical Hospital. Despite her valiant battle, Lunetta passed away surrounded by her loving family.
Her adoptive mother shared her deep feelings in a Facebook post: “I will never forget her and how much she meant to me. She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”
Although Lunetta’s journey has come to an end, her final year was filled with love, joy, and the attention she always deserved. Her inspiring story is a reminder that every dog, regardless of their condition, deserves a chance at happiness. Rest in peace, dear Lunetta.
